After several redesigns and a gradual decline in prominence behind the acquired Fitbit, we are now witnessing its official end. Google announced that it will migrate existing users to the new Google Health app, an announcement accompanied by the arrival of the discreet fitness tracker Fitbit Air. An End That Surprised No One Google Health: One App for Everything Fitbit Air Arrived Alongside the App An End That Surprised No One It has been clear for a long time that Google Fit was nearing its end. The company began fully prioritizing the Fitbit ecosystem in 2022, and in 2024, it also closed the original app’s API to new developers. The end became even more apparent in recent weeks when specific details about the aforementioned tracker and Google Health subscription leaked. Importantly, existing users will not lose their data. Google promises a full-fledged migration tool that will allow users to transfer their history of steps, heart rate, and other metrics to the new app. A precise launch date has not yet been announced; the company has only stated “sometime in 2026.” Google Health: One App for Everything The Google Health app can be understood as a rebranded Fitbit app, and it will begin downloading to users’ phones on May 19 as an automatic update. However, it brings more than just a new name and logo. Following the example of Apple’s Health, the creators will offer an interface divided into four tabs (Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health), the option to synchronize medical records (currently only in the USA), or integration with the AI assistant Google Health Coach, which is based on the Gemini model. Fitbit Air Arrived Alongside the App The second major new product is the Fitbit Air fitness tracker. It is the smallest and lightest device in the brand’s history; its display-less module weighs just 5.2 grams and measures 34.9 × 17 × 8.3 mm. It targets users who want to monitor their health without having to wear a bulky smartwatch on their wrist. The Google Fit app will end this year! What will replace it?
