Washing and drying laundry are household chores that most of us get done as quickly as possible and would rather not think about at all. This is precisely the routine that Xiaomi is targeting, as it gradually builds its portfolio of large home appliances outside of China. Last autumn, the brand’s very first washing machine, the Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer Pro 9kg, arrived in Europe, and the company is now expanding its offering with a more affordable variant. Along with the Mijia Top Load Washer 13kg, which we wrote about in a separate article, Xiaomi also introduced the Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer 8kg. It is front-loading, fits into narrower spaces, and inherits most of the features of the more expensive Pro, although it lags slightly in some respects.

Smart washing, controlled from your phone

The main appeal of the new product aligns with what you expect from Xiaomi. You connect the washing machine to the Xiaomi Home app, from where you can start a program, schedule a wash, or check the remaining time, even when you’re not at home. The My Time program is available, allowing you to set the wash duration, temperature, and number of rinses to your preference, and the software can recommend a program based on your habits. The machine then takes care of new functions and wash cycles itself thanks to OTA updates.

In total, the manufacturer lists over 30 programs, with 14 directly on the color touch panel and another 16 in the app. For everyday use, a 15-minute quick wash for smaller loads is suitable, while the Smart wash system automatically weighs the load and adjusts water consumption and cycle length according to its weight. The washing machine can also complete a full wash and dry of 3 kg of laundry in 180 minutes with a single press.

Steam disinfection and gentle drying

Among the features, the steam hygiene program is noteworthy. According to Xiaomi, based on measurements from the TÜV SÜD laboratory, steam can remove up to 99.99% of bacteria such as E. coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The machine also offers dedicated Baby Care cycles and a program for underwear, making it appealing to families with small children or allergy sufferers. Less common features include aromatherapy washing, which infuses fragrance into laundry using low-temperature steam, and the Refresh care mode for refreshing and smoothing a few items of clothing without a full wash.

Drying is controlled by precise temperature sensors along with 3D air circulation, ensuring the machine ends the cycle when the laundry is dry, without overheating it. Thorough washing is handled by Power Wash technology with a stronger water jet and a large drum with a diameter of 525 mm. Self-cleaning functions are also present, where the inner drum is cleaned with hot water before the next wash, as well as antibacterial door seals.

The narrow body with a depth of 535 mm is also commendable, as it fits more easily into a cabinet or a smaller bathroom. Furthermore, the washing machine has received the German iF Design Award. Xiaomi provides a 12-year warranty on the motor and a two-year warranty on other parts.

How does it differ from the Pro 9kg model?

The 8kg washing machine is essentially a stripped-down version of the Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer Pro 9kg, which is already sold in our market. It shares steam disinfection, the Xiaomi Home app, Power Wash technology, and the same large drum, but Xiaomi has reserved several features exclusively for the more expensive model.

The biggest difference is in automatic dispensing. The Pro version automatically measures detergent and fabric softener according to the weight and dirtiness of the laundry, and one fill of the dispensers lasts approximately a month, using pre-mixing technology for the detergent. This automatic feature is missing in the 8kg model, and you dispense agents manually. The drive also differs: the Pro has a direct drive motor without a belt, while the cheaper model relies on a classic inverter motor. The more expensive version also handles faster washing in 12 minutes and, according to the manufacturer, offers voice control via Google and Alexa, which Xiaomi does not mention for the 8kg new model.

The 8kg model, on the other hand, retains two advantages. It is narrower (535 mm compared to 570 mm for the Pro) and Xiaomi declares higher energy savings for it, specifically 30% beyond the Class A threshold compared to 25% for the Pro model. However, caution is advised here, as both figures come from different testing laboratories and, according to the manufacturer, are not official EU energy labels, so do not take them as a direct comparison.

Price and Availability

The Mijia Front Load Washer Dryer 8kg starts in Europe at 539 euros, which is approximately 13,200 CZK converted. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed the exact Czech price or launch date. And this is where the new product encounters an unpleasant problem: the better-equipped Pro 9kg can already be purchased on Alza for 12,990 CZK, so unless Xiaomi sets the price significantly lower in our country than in other European countries, the purchase simply won’t make sense. Otherwise, it could be an ambitious competitor to models from more established brands.

Would you opt for the cheaper 8kg washing machine, or would you rather pay extra for the better-equipped Pro?
