According to the latest findings, Google is preparing a fantastic improvement to the setup guide after launching a new smartphone. The entire process would be facilitated by an AI-powered assistant, Gemini, which could easily explain, for example, why it makes sense to add a recovery email or phone number, or how to set up NFC payments. This new feature could be appreciated by older users, for instance, who no longer dare to set up a new mobile phone without the assistance of their loved ones.

What could Gemini handle during phone setup?

The new guide would apparently launch immediately after you sign in to your Google account on a freshly unboxed phone. The artificial intelligence would then go through the account settings and suggest what to add or enable – from a recovery phone number and email to contactless payments via Google Wallet. The upcoming feature was highlighted by the website Android Authority.

In addition to account security, the assistant would also offer to enter your home address or subscribe to news and tips from Google. The whole cycle would then conclude with a list of recommended applications, compiled based on what the account knows about you. Furthermore, individual steps are designed to apply instantly, without you having to jump to other applications – you would complete everything directly within the guide.

You’ll be able to ask the AI assistant yourself

On each settings screen, an input field “Ask Gemini” would be added. You could either type your own question into it or choose from pre-prepared questions related to the current step. For recovery details, the code offers, for example, “Why do I need recovery details?”, “Are my recovery details private?”, or “Can I change this later?”.

This makes sense especially for less experienced users: explanations arrive directly at the step they don’t understand, instead of them having to look elsewhere. Thus, Gemini becomes a handy guide even during the initial phone setup.

This is not the only place where Google is pushing its assistant. We recently wrote about how Gemini is becoming an agent that browses files and performs tasks for you on your computer. The setup guide is the same idea aimed at the very beginning – the moment you first turn on a new mobile phone.

When will we see the feature live?

You cannot launch the guide on any phone yet. It has only appeared in the code of the Google Play Services beta (version 26.30.31), which is where developers test things that may not be released at all. Google has not announced anything yet, so we don’t know the timeline or which phones the new feature would apply to.

However, we hope that Google will hurry and release the feature as soon as possible. At the same time, we would appreciate it if the support didn’t only apply to a handful of devices but to a wider range of products. In practice, artificial intelligence could help, for example, older users who would no longer dare to set up a new smartphone without assistance.
