Google Messages is getting a major visual overhaul. Will you get used to the new interface?

Android Authority delved into the code of the latest beta version of the Google Messages app and discovered a set of changes currently hidden beneath the surface. Google is preparing a significant rearrangement of the main control elements and a new search experience.

What’s changing in the Google Messages interface?

Currently, Google Messages has a new chat button in the bottom right corner, with a Gemini shortcut floating above it, and the search magnifying glass tucked away in the top right of the header. However, in the newly discovered design, the cards will be thoroughly shuffled. Gemini moves up to the header, replacing the current magnifying glass icon, and the new chat button moves from the bottom corner to the center of the bottom edge.

Most importantly, however, is the fate of search. The magnifying glass is leaving the header and moving down, right next to the new chat button – to a place where you can comfortably reach it with your thumb, even on a large phone.

The app will offer what you need, when you need it

The most interesting aspect of the entire redesign is how the buttons behave dynamically. Upon opening the app, the new chat button is expanded at the bottom, presenting itself as the primary action. As soon as you start scrolling through the conversation list, the new chat button shrinks, and search expands in its place. The app thus anticipates what you want to do and provides you with the control element you most likely need at that moment – when browsing your inbox, logically, you’re more likely to be looking for a specific message.

The relocation of the magnifying glass closer to your thumb is no coincidence. It’s related to a larger search redesign that Google has been working on for some time. Android Authority already described last summer a revamped search interface with a bar at the bottom edge and larger previews of images, videos, and links. The results page is also set to be redesigned – it will now separate conversations from individual messages and show a larger preview for found messages.

What other new features is Google preparing?

The rearranged controls and search will likely not be the only changes. Previously, a redesigned display of pinned conversations also appeared – with larger contact icons and a preview of new messages directly on the card. Google is also toying with the idea of limiting the number of conversations that can be pinned. This adjustment is also still under development, and the company may release it along with other new features.

All described changes come from an analysis of the installation package (so-called APK teardown), meaning from work-in-progress code hidden in a beta version. Just because a feature appears in the code does not mean it will reach users in the same form – or at all. Google has not yet revealed when or if it will actually implement the new interface.
