The wait for the new overlay is coming to an end for Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phone owners outside of China. Xiaomi announced that stable HyperOS 4 is starting to roll out to users in stages, and has published a schedule for both phones and tablets. It is divided into three waves from early November to December.

Stable HyperOS 4 replaces the previous beta

Outside of China, only a global beta has been available so far, which Xiaomi first made available to the Xiaomi 17 series and later extended to models 17T and 15. Now the final version is coming, and the schedule includes 67 phones and 15 tablets. A model not found in the lists below is not included in this schedule.

Xiaomi notes in the schedule that the dates are estimates and may vary by region, operator, model, and development progress. Furthermore, the order of models in the list does not correspond to the exact release order. For each wave, only the period from which it starts is indicated, not a specific day.

New features: glass design, faster apps, and more artificial intelligence

At first glance, the most noticeable change is the new look. Xiaomi bases it on a material it calls “soft light glass,” evidently inspired by Apple’s Liquid Glass design language. System elements change transparency according to the content beneath them and react to taps or swipes with light effects.

Notifications now stack on top of each other, you can resize folders and stack widgets on the home screen, and customize clock size and font on the lock screen. However, not every device will get everything – lock screen customizations are only for selected phones, larger folders are not yet available on tablets, and glass effects vary by hardware, according to Xiaomi.

The second pillar is performance. According to Xiaomi’s internal tests on the Xiaomi 17 Ultra model, 30 applications launch together in 36.8 seconds after nine hours of use, instead of 40.3 seconds with HyperOS 3, which is roughly 9% faster. The camera should launch in 809 ms instead of 1,044 ms. This is to be achieved through more precise load distribution, smarter memory management, and redesigned Xiaomi proprietary applications.

Xiaomi HyperAI artificial intelligence has also received a lot of attention. Notes can be dictated with a single tap, and AI will sort them, extract tasks, or convert them into a mind map. Meeting recordings can be summarized and supplemented with an outline, and there’s also face-to-face conversation translation or smarter photo searching in the gallery. However, most AI features are only available on selected models and in certain regions and languages. Xiaomi does not specify which ones on its website.

Post-quantum encryption is intended to oversee privacy, currently protecting key exchange in end-to-end encrypted communication. The connection with iPhone and Apple Watch, which we described for the Chinese version, is not mentioned by Xiaomi on its global website.
