Half the internet is debating this detail about the iPhone Duo. The reality, however, might be much simpler

For a phone that starts at 54,990 crowns in the Czech Republic, one would expect to know everything about its camera. However, Apple withheld one crucial piece of information about its first foldable iPhone Duo — the size of the main camera sensor. This sparked a debate that is quite instructive for understanding the company’s marketing language.

Two words that caused confusion

Officially, the Duo features a 48MPx Dual Fusion system: a main camera with a 26mm focal length and f/1.6 aperture, plus a 48Mpx wide-angle lens. For the main sensor, Apple uses the designation „Hybrid Focus Pixels” — and that’s what raised the alarm. The company uses the same term for the affordable iPhone 17e, while the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro have „100% Focus Pixels” in their specifications.

This led to the belief that Apple put the same sensor in its fifty-five thousand crown foldable as in its cheapest model. However, this reasoning has a flaw: the designation describes the focusing architecture, not the physical size of the chip. These are two different things, only loosely related.

Measurements instead of speculation

However, an independent comparison of camera module dimensions suggests something different. According to available measurements, the module in the iPhone Duo is noticeably larger than those in the 16e and 17e models and is proportionally closer to the standard iPhone 17 and 17 Pro. A user on X reached the same conclusion, overlaying an official image of the Duo over a press photo of the 17e model in a graphics editor — the foldable’s dual camera appears visibly more substantial.

Why it’s still not proof

But let’s be precise. The dimensions of the camera module include not only the sensor itself but also the focusing motor and the optical stabilization carrier. A larger module, therefore, does not automatically mean a larger chip, and certainty will only come with a phone teardown. Nevertheless, both methods point in the same direction, so the fear that Apple put a budget sensor into its most expensive new product is not yet confirmed.

The question remains why Apple didn’t state the sensor size at all, or at least mention at the keynote that the main sensor is, for example, the same one used by the 17 Pro. For a phone that costs more than most laptops, this is no small matter — and the absence of a telephoto lens, which the company replaces with a 2x crop from the main camera, doesn’t add to its persuasiveness. Pre-orders start on October 16, with sales beginning on October 23.
