Mapy.com are apparently preparing offline maps for watches. Apple users should be the first to get them.

Check a map on your watch even where you don’t have a signal? With the Mapy.com app, this is not yet possible, as map data is loaded onto watches exclusively online. However, this is likely to change. The Czech map portal hinted on X that one of the most anticipated features could soon become a reality.

Mapy.com has already revealed a piece of the interface

Mapy.com shared a brief post on X, “Something’s cooking…”, with hashtags #OfflineMaps and #SmartWatches, and added a photo of an Apple Watch with a map download offer.

The image from the Mapy.com post shows a list of offline maps divided by regions under the “Czech Republic” item. The Liberec region has the status “Downloaded” and a size of 76.6 MB, the Moravian-Silesian region would take up 110.8 MB, and another region, cut off in the photo, shows 91.2 MB. The “Czech Republic” item itself also has a download icon. Selecting smaller units will make sense, as watch storage is not infinite, and you don’t need the entire republic for a trip to the Jizera Mountains.

Today, watches only show maps with a connection

Mapy.com launched the app for Apple Watch and Wear OS last spring as a Premium subscription benefit. Today, it offers navigation with haptic feedback, activity tracking via Stopař, and several map layers, including tourist maps. Stopař records the route even without a phone, but watches will not display the map without a connection. Furthermore, according to the help, navigation requires a paired phone, and Mapy.com has not yet stated whether this will change with offline maps.

The release date is also unknown. Furthermore, the photo only shows Apple Watch, so owners of Wear OS watches will have to wait for confirmation.
