In a few weeks, Christmas lights will illuminate homes, and with them, the nightly crawl behind the Christmas tree to the socket will begin. A smart plug, which you can control from your mobile, will solve exactly this for you. The TP-Link Tapo P110M now costs 359 CZK instead of 479 CZK on Alza, without a discount code. Alza has never sold it this cheaply before.

Quick summary:
✅ Makes sense for lamps, Christmas lighting, or finding out how much power a computer or TV consumes. The Tapo app works on both Android and iPhone.
⚠️ Consider that it only connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, you need a hub for the chosen Matter platform, and in a classic double socket, it might cover the second outlet.
💡 For 359 CZK, you can get it on Alza at its lowest price ever.

Shows consumption in watts and crowns

The main draw is power consumption measurement. In the Tapo app, you can see the current power consumption of the connected appliance, as well as daily, monthly, and annual consumption in kilowatt-hours. If you enter the price you pay for electricity, the app will also calculate the estimated operating costs. According to reviews, one customer found that their gaming computer, including the monitor, consumes approximately 450 W under full load. Another discovered that their wine cooler consumed much more than the manufacturer promised.

You can then schedule the switching. The plug supports a weekly schedule, an automatic shutdown timer after a set period, and an away mode that turns a lamp on and off at different times to make it look like someone is home. According to the description on Alza, scheduled routines continue to run even if the internet goes down.

TP-Link states a maximum load of 16 A, which is 3,680 W for resistive loads. This is more than enough for common electronics, lighting, or chargers.

You can also add it to Apple Home via Matter

The letter M in the name signifies support for the Matter standard. Thanks to it, you can add the plug not only to the Tapo app but also to Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings. You can control it by voice, including via Siri, and thanks to the multi-admin feature, you can have it in several platforms at once. One family member can control it from Apple Home, and another from Google Home.

This differentiates it from the 40 CZK cheaper Tapo P110. It has the same dimensions and the Tapo app for Android and iPhone, and is compatible with Alexa, Google Assistant, and SmartThings. However, TP-Link does not state Matter, Siri, and Apple Home support for it.

However, Matter has its limitations. According to TP-Link, you need a hub for the chosen platform. And you won’t see consumption graphs through it: Apple Home, Google Home, and Alexa will only display the plug as a switch; measurement remains in the Tapo app. SmartThings is an exception, where consumption measurement can be enabled after resetting the plug. Several customers also write that before adding it to Apple Home, they first had to set up the plug in the Tapo app and update its firmware.

Rating 4.8 out of 5 and minimal complaints

On Alza, 459 customers rated the plug with an average score of 4.8 out of 5, and 96% of them recommend it. The complaint rate is 0.56%. In reviews, people often praise the quick setup, clear app, and consumption measurement. One customer verified the data with another meter, and the results were similar.

Complaints are in the minority. A few people write that the plug occasionally disconnects from the network, and one mentions that it sometimes restarts itself, thereby turning off the computer connected to it. Others accidentally turned off a running computer in the app because the switch is readily available there. The plug can be used to measure computer consumption, but it’s better not to use it for devices that must run without interruption, such as a router.

The plug only supplies power, the appliance must handle the rest

A smart plug does nothing more than supply or cut off electricity to the connected appliance. Therefore, the appliance’s own switch must remain in the “on” position. A lamp or string of lights will then turn on as soon as the plug supplies power to them. However, an appliance that waits for a button press after being connected to electricity will not turn on by itself.

What else to consider: the plug only connects to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, has IP20 protection, so it’s for indoor use only, and although it’s compact, in a classic Czech double socket, it might cover the second outlet according to several customers. Two P110M plugs reportedly won’t fit into it at all.

Most appreciated by Apple Home owners and multi-platform families

For 359 CZK, you get consumption measurement, time schedules, and voice control. Those who are building a smart home in Apple Home and families where one person controls lights via Siri and another via Google Home will get the most out of the P110M. It will also be useful for curious individuals who want to find out how much power their computer, TV, or refrigerator consumes at home, and for people going to the mountains who want a lamp to turn on in their home in the evening.

For those who are satisfied with the Tapo app, Google Assistant, or Alexa, the cheaper P110 will suffice, even on an iPhone. However, don’t expect Matter and Apple Home support.

Do you control anything at home with a smart plug, or is a regular switch enough for you for now?
