I’m convinced we all know this: a message arrives that you don’t want to reply to right away, but you’re curious what it says. iPhone owners solve this by long-pressing a chat, which shows messages without blue ticks. Now, the same trick is apparently coming to WhatsApp for Android, and even in a better form.

Chat preview will also be scrollable on Android

The Android Authority editorial team found the code for the new feature in WhatsApp beta version 2.26.44.12 and managed to get it working before its release. After long-pressing a conversation in the chat list, a floating card with the latest messages will pop up. Below it, a redesigned menu will appear with options for pinning, archiving, muting, marking as unread, and deleting the chat.

The main thing is that, according to the editorial team’s tests, the preview will not send a read receipt. Compared to the iPhone, Android will add one more advantage: it will be possible to scroll up to older messages within the card. On iOS, the preview is fixed, so you can’t read an entire longer conversation in it.

Today, long-pressing a chat only selects it

On Android, long-pressing a conversation now only selects it and shows a bar with icons at the top. You can’t peek into messages, so you’re left with reading them from notifications. But that doesn’t help if you’ve already dismissed the notification or have dozens of them.

The feature only makes sense for those who have read receipts enabled. They can only be turned off globally and it applies both ways: you won’t send blue ticks, but you won’t see them for others either.

When the new feature will arrive is not yet clear

According to Android Authority, the preview is still under development and is not even shown in the open beta. It is not clear when it will arrive in WhatsApp. Since it is a feature found in the application’s code, it is possible that its form may change before official launch, or in the worst case, it may not see the light of day at all.

Do you prefer to read WhatsApp messages secretly, or do you not care about blue ticks at all?
