Googlebook is not a rebranded Chromebook. See what it looks like

When Google introduced the Googlebook category this May, it talked a lot about it but showed little. Now, the first images of actual hardware have leaked – and the surprise isn’t the laptop, but what lies next to it.

Three devices, not one

The images, which look more like finished marketing renders than factory photos, capture two classic laptops in two sizes and a detachable tablet. The smaller laptop has a USB-C port and a headphone jack on the right edge, while the larger one adds a USB-A port, another USB-C, and a backlit power button; on the left side, there’s a jack, a USB-C, and either a second USB-A or HDMI – the image resolution isn’t enough to be certain.

The third piece is the most interesting. The 2-in-1 tablet with a kickstand, detachable keyboard, and stylus, which magnetically attaches to the top edge, is a format that wasn’t expected for Googlebooks. But it makes sense – Lenovo has been doing exactly this with Chromebooks for years. On the back of the tablet, a Glow Bar light strip is embedded in the camera module.

The set also includes a wireless mouse, which leaked earlier. It weighs 59 grams, has a light strip, and a dedicated AI button. The fact that Google dictated standards not only for laptops but for the entire accessory ecosystem speaks volumes about how tightly it wants to control the platform.

Why it’s not just a different name for a Chromebook

Here’s the core of the matter. Chromebooks were built on a browser and ChromeOS. Googlebook builds on Android, and Gemini is not an add-on, but a default part of the system. Furthermore, Google has set a mandatory hardware minimum for partners – a powerful chipset, sufficient memory, and standardized stylus behavior, so that a pen on an ASUS device behaves the same as on a Lenovo. This exact disarray has plagued Chromebooks for years.

The first wave, in addition to Lenovo, is expected to be built by Acer, ASUS, Dell, and HP. Google announced that the devices would appear in the autumn, and given how finished the renders look, the IFA trade fair seems like a likely stage.

It won’t be cheap

No one has released prices, but expectations are clear. Google already stated at the announcement that Googlebooks are aimed at the premium segment – and that was before the full impact of the memory shortage, which is driving up prices for all consumer electronics this year, became apparent. Anyone hoping for a seven-thousand-crown Chromebook with Android instead of ChromeOS will likely be disappointed.

Let’s emphasize that this is still a leak. Lenovo has not announced the devices, we don’t know the display parameters, chipsets, battery life, or if and when they will arrive on the Czech market.
