The Huawei MateBook Pro S won't let anyone look over your shoulder. See how the display disappears from others' view

Hardware protection for displays against prying eyes was popularized this year by Samsung in its flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Now, the same principle has arrived in a laptop for the first time – and Huawei immediately suggests it’s taking it a step further. The new MateBook Pro S hides the image from anyone not sitting directly in front of it.

How does the Huawei MateBook Pro S display hide the image?

The panel has two independent sets of pixels within a single OLED display. One renders a normal image for sharing, while the other projects a narrowed image visible only from directly in front of the laptop – from the side, a neighbor will only see darkness. You can switch between modes with a single button, and the display also recognizes when someone is looking over your shoulder and alerts you.

Huawei compares itself directly to Samsung

Samsung uses Flex Magic Pixel technology for display privacy, which darkens the image when viewed from the side. According to Huawei, however, this comes at the cost of half the pixels, so brightness and resolution decrease in private mode. The MateBook’s own panel reportedly uses 100% of the pixels in this mode, so you won’t lose brightness or sharpness. This is currently a manufacturer’s claim that we cannot independently verify.

It’s no surprise that Chinese brands are eyeing hardware display protection – we wrote about it before, although at that time purely in connection with mobile phones.

Price and availability

In addition to the smart display, it offers a 14.2-inch OLED with a resolution of 3,120 × 2,080 pixels, a 3:2 aspect ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1,600 nits. The 798-gram body made of magnesium-lithium alloy runs HarmonyOS 6.1 and the Kirin XE90 chip.

The Privacy Screen Edition is currently sold only in China, starting from 10,299 yuan (approximately 32,000 CZK) for the version with 24 GB RAM and 512 GB storage; the 1TB disk variant costs 11,799 yuan (about 37,000 CZK).
