Xiaomi Sound Play is a great-looking speaker with RGB and Bluetooth 6.0

Following the launch of the well-equipped speaker Xiaomi Sound Party for less than two thousand, the brand introduces the Sound Play model, which, given its specifications, will likely represent a more affordable alternative. It was unveiled in four attractive colors, utilizes Bluetooth 6.0 technology, and features an 18W total output sound system.

Design with Two Layers of Lights

According to Xiaomi, the Sound Play follows the design language awarded the Red Dot Award and relies on minimalist lines. The most striking element is the infinite mirror effect in the upper part, which, according to the manufacturer, is meant to evoke a time tunnel, complemented by ambient backlighting in the lower part of the body. The speaker offers five color effects and three backlighting modes named Drumbeat, Water Ripple, and Always-on, allowing you to customize the visual aspect from quiet reading to a louder celebration.

There will be four color variants to choose from: Black, White, Green, and Purple. The body has compact dimensions, weighs 415 grams, and features a soft rubber strap for carrying. The speaker thus falls into the category of devices that you can easily throw into a backpack or place on a shelf as a decoration.

Sound and Multi-Speaker Connection

The sound is handled by an 18W full-range speaker in an oval track shape, complemented by external and internal passive radiators, which, according to Xiaomi, enhances bass depth. Connection to devices is provided by Bluetooth 6.0, and thanks to the built-in microphone, the Sound Play can also handle hands-free calls when connected to a phone.

More interesting are the possibilities for connecting with other units. TWS technology connects two units into separate left and right channels, giving you true stereo. If you want to sound a larger space, Party mode with Auracast support can synchronize up to 100 compatible speakers at once, including synchronized lighting. Connection between speakers works by a short press of the Auracast button on each of them.

Battery Life and Durability

Inside, we find a 2,600 mAh battery, which Xiaomi associates with up to 14 hours of playback and a full charging time of around 2.5 hours. However, it’s important to read carefully here: the manufacturer measured those 14 hours at 40% volume, in Bluetooth mode, and with the lights off. As soon as you increase the volume or turn on the lighting effects, which are central to this new product, the actual battery life will significantly decrease.

Although the speaker boasts IP68 rating, Xiaomi itself explicitly states in its notes that it is not professionally waterproof and offers only basic protection against splashing water and dust. The manufacturer directly warns against using or charging the speaker underwater or in humid environments. So, it should be sufficient for rain, sand, or dust by the pool, but definitely don’t count on it as a diving companion.

Price and Availability

The Xiaomi Sound Play has appeared on the brand’s global website, and local representatives have also reported on it. Therefore, it can be expected to be available soon on the shelves of domestic stores. However, we do not yet know its exact price.
