Samsung unveiled a display with up to 10,000 nits brightness. The brightest mobile OLED also offers up to 165Hz refresh rate

The pursuit of brighter displays has a new record holder. Samsung Display has unveiled its most advanced OLED panel for smartphones yet, and its peak brightness climbs up to 10,000 nits – a level no other mobile display has achieved so far. However, the fact that it’s a Samsung manufacturing division doesn’t mean you’ll see the novelty first in Galaxy devices.

10,000 nits brightness sounds great, but there’s a catch

As usual, the 10,000 nits value applies only to a small portion of the image in an HDR scene, not the entire display area. When the entire panel lights up at once, the manufacturer states a global peak of 2,800 nits. Even this is a benchmark that many of today’s phones cannot reach – in practice, it mainly means better readability in direct sunlight and more pronounced HDR.

The panel belongs to the new LEAD 2.0 series and, in addition to brightness, also focuses on smoothness and efficiency. It brings WQHD resolution (2,560 × 1,440 pixels) and LTPO technology, which allows the refresh rate to smoothly jump between 1 and 165 Hz depending on what’s on screen. The division also promises up to 30% lower power consumption compared to the previous generation, an anti-reflective layer, and PWM dimming at a frequency of 3,300 Hz, which should be gentler on the eyes.

Why won’t Samsung get it first?

Ironically, Samsung’s most advanced display appeared earlier with competitors. The M16 panel debuted in the latest iPhone 18 Pro series and in Apple’s iPhone Duo model. However, Apple states a peak brightness of only 3,000 nits for both phones, so it’s likely a slightly different variant. In the Android camp, it will appear for the very first time in the iQOO 16 phone, which was officially unveiled in China today. In its case, the manufacturer already mentions the peak local brightness of 10,000 nits.

And what about Samsung itself? According to current information, the M16 panel will head to the upcoming flagship models Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra, which are expected early next year. The earlier Pixel 11 from Google apparently still opted for an older generation panel, so iQOO owners will be the first to enjoy the brightest display on Android.
