Xiaomi has released a new version of its popular night light. It lights up when it detects motion and costs next to nothing.

When you go to the bathroom at night, you either fumble in the dark or turn on the ceiling light and risk waking up the whole household. This exact situation is meant to be solved by the Xiaomi Mijia Night Light 4, which has just appeared in crowdfunding on the Chinese platform Xiaomi Youpin. It lights up automatically as soon as you approach, and the main novelty is a more precise radar motion sensor.

How does the Xiaomi night light with radar work?

A fundamental change from its predecessor is the sensor. Instead of a conventional infrared sensor, the new device now monitors its surroundings with a 24 GHz radar, which, according to Xiaomi, covers a 120° angle. It detects movement up to three meters directly in front and two and a half meters to the sides, reportedly even subtle movements, so there should be no unnecessary dimming when you are just sitting quietly.

The radar is also complemented by an ambient light sensor, which ensures that the lamp only activates after dark – it remains off during the day. Once you leave its range, the light turns off automatically after ten seconds. The manufacturer promises higher stability for the radar compared to infrared sensors: it should not be affected by room temperature or clothing material.

What about the light itself?

The light emanates from the back and reflects off the wall, so it doesn’t shine directly into your eyes but is diffused. There are four brightness levels – 1, 3, 5, and 15 lumens – which you can switch manually. Xiaomi emphasizes that it is a warm light with a temperature of 2800 K, without visible flickering and without harmful blue light (safety class RG0).

Seventeen LED diodes are responsible for illumination, and neither the color nor the temperature of the light can be changed – it remains a single warm hue. This makes the Night Light 4 more of an orientation light for the night than a full-fledged lamp, which is also consistent with its low brightness in lumens.

Xiaomi promises up to eight months of battery life

Inside is an 800 mAh battery, which charges via USB-C. Thanks to its power-saving mode, the manufacturer claims it can last up to eight months on a single charge at the lowest brightness; at continuously highest brightness, the battery life drops to about three months. However, these are Xiaomi’s figures, which we cannot verify ourselves – actual battery life will depend on how often you pass by the light.

Don’t expect any Bluetooth or connection to the Xiaomi Home app here – the lamp operates purely independently and is controlled by two hidden buttons for mode (off, continuous lighting, sensor) and brightness. You can attach it with adhesive tape or a magnetic holder, for example, to a wall, under a cabinet, in the bedroom, hallway, or bathroom.

Price and Availability

In Chinese crowdfunding on the Xiaomi Youpin platform, one unit costs 59 yuan, which is approximately 185 CZK, while a twin pack costs 115 yuan (around 360 CZK). The campaign runs until September 16th, after which the product will move to regular sales. The new product is not officially heading to the Czech Republic yet, but the previous generation was sold here.
