What can the IKEA TRETAKT plug do?

You can control it in several ways – via the IKEA Home smart mobile app, with a physical button directly on the device, or with a wireless remote control or motion sensor. You can pair up to ten of them with one remote or sensor at once, so you can light up an entire set of lights with a single gesture. The manufacturer states a maximum load of 3,680 W, so it’s sufficient for more powerful appliances.

However, one thing is good to know in advance. The plug itself for 129 crowns can handle the basics, but the full smart experience is only unlocked by the DIRIGERA hub – which is sold separately and costs significantly more than the plug. Without it, you can pair it with a remote control, for example, but scheduling timers, controlling from anywhere, and voice assistants (Google Home, Apple Home, and Alexa) will only work with the hub.

Why is IKEA clearing out the plug?

The low price has a reason. The Swedish manufacturer is gradually abandoning older Zigbee wireless technology and building its smart home on the newer Matter standard (more precisely, Matter over Thread). Last autumn, it therefore introduced over twenty new smart products, including the successor GRILLPLATS plug with Matter support.

For you, this means two things. TRETAKT continues to work reliably with the DIRIGERA hub or the older TRÅDFRI gateway, so buying it for 129 crowns makes sense. However, if you are just building your smart home, the newer generation with Matter is more promising – it is not tied only to IKEA and can be connected to devices from other brands as well.

Price and Availability

On sale, the plug costs 129 crowns, which is seventy crowns, or roughly a third less than the usual 199. Additionally, the product displays a “last chance to buy” warning, so once stock runs out, it will permanently disappear from the IKEA website offer.

You can buy it online or in physical stores, and it’s also available via the Click and Collect service. You won’t find a cheaper entry ticket into the world of smart appliance control anytime soon – just be aware that you are getting a discontinued model, not a new product with a future.

Are you tempted by the smart plug for 129 crowns, or would you rather wait for the newer generation with Matter?
