Are you wondering if you could heat your home more smartly? Alza has discounted the premium Tado X radiator head as part of Black Friday, and this time, quite significantly. One piece costs 1,689 CZK instead of 2,599 CZK at the time of writing, without any discount code. A four-pack is even more advantageous.

Quick summary:
✅ Makes sense if you already have an Apple TV, HomePod mini, or another Thread router at home, or if you plan to equip more radiators.
⚠️ Consider that the sensor in the head measures right next to the radiator, the application does not support Czech, and some functions are behind a subscription.
💡 For 1,689 CZK you get a head that has never been cheaper on Alza in the last year – in a four-pack, one piece even costs 1,539 CZK.

Tado X is the cheapest it’s been all year

According to price history from Hlídač Shopů, the Tado X on Alza was sold for its lowest price of 1,819 CZK in the last twelve months. For most of October, it cost 1,949 CZK, and in recent days, it was back to its full price of 2,599 CZK. The current 1,689 CZK is thus 910 CZK (35%) less than the price before the promotion, 260 CZK less than the October promotional price, and 130 CZK less than the previous annual minimum.

Even more interesting is the Tado X Quattro four-pack for 6,156 CZK instead of the stated 9,619 CZK. One head in this pack will cost you 1,539 CZK, which is another 150 CZK cheaper than buying individual pieces. To be fair, compared to the lowest price in the last 30 days (7,214 CZK), the four-pack discount is “only” 1,058 CZK. However, even the Quattro has not been cheaper in the last year, previously costing a minimum of 6,729 CZK.

Display, dial, and rechargeable battery instead of AA batteries

Tado X looks more like a design accessory than a classic thermostatic head. You can set the temperature with a rotary dial or via the touch display, whose orientation can be rotated – useful for radiators where the valve points sideways. Instead of AA batteries, it has a removable rechargeable battery charged via USB-C. The manufacturer states that charging takes about two hours and is sufficient approximately once a year.

The package includes six adapters, which, according to Tado, cover the vast majority of radiator valves. The head connects to Apple Home, Google Home, and Amazon Alexa via the Matter standard. In the app, you can then set time schedules for each room separately.

Tado X will not work without a Thread router

This is the most important information before purchasing. The listing on Alza for the individual head mentions Wi-Fi, but in reality, Tado X communicates via Thread and requires a Tado Bridge X or another compatible Thread border router. This can be, for example, an Apple TV 4K or HomePod mini – several customers confirm that with an Apple TV, the head works in Apple Home without an additional hub. If you don’t have anything like that at home, expect to purchase a Bridge X. Furthermore, control in Apple Home itself is quite limited – according to one reviewer, you can only set the temperature and turn the head on or off there; for full functionality, you need the Tado app. For connection to Home Assistant, customers mention that Bridge X is necessary.

The second limitation concerns owners of the older generation. Tado X is not compatible with the Tado V3+ system, so you cannot add it to an existing setup. Furthermore, the application is only in English or German, and the manufacturer has included open window detection and automatic heating shutdown based on your location in the paid AI Assist subscription. Those who do not want to pay can build similar automation in Apple Home or Home Assistant with their own sensors.

Customers praise quiet operation, but have reservations about temperature measurement

Tado X has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 from 51 customers on Alza, and 94% of them recommend it. Over 2,000 units have been sold, and the return rate is low (0.79%). Reviews primarily praise the extremely quiet motor, easy installation, and the ability to rotate the display. One customer appreciates that the head maintains temperature with an accuracy of a tenth of a degree.

Conversely, some people complain that the sensor, placed a few centimeters from a warm radiator, measures inaccurately. Several reviewers therefore recommend purchasing an external temperature sensor, with which regulation works significantly better. When connecting multiple units, some encountered complicated pairing that required repeated resets.

Quattro is especially suitable for an apartment with four radiators

Tado X makes the most sense for people who already have an Apple TV or another Thread router at home and don’t mind setting up advanced features in the English Tado app. This typically applies to apartment owners with three to four radiators – for them, the Quattro for 6,156 CZK is the most advantageous option. The second group are those who plan to gradually build an entire Tado ecosystem, including a thermostat for their boiler.

Those who primarily want to save money and don’t care about the display can also find cheaper Matter-enabled heads. For example, Aqara W600, which we recently saw for under a thousand CZK (though it also needs a Thread router). However, for those who want a quiet head with a nice display and Matter, they haven’t had a better opportunity on Alza for 1,689 CZK yet.

Do you already have smart thermostatic heads on your radiators, or do you still heat the old-fashioned way?
